Advocacy Visit to Hajiya Fatima M. Madugu - The Hon. Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Niger State
The team adequately briefed the Hon. Commissioner on the ISERT projects and findings of the national evaluation which among other things revealed the challenges facing FLHE in Nigeria such as lack of documentation/data, lack of political will, funding or donors’ attrition and the need for government ownership of the programme. She was acquainted with the need to position teachers, ANCOPPS, SACA, desk officers, etc. on best practices in FLHE delivery. The team presented the ISERT report, IEC materials, guidelines and Youth Friendly Centre (YFC) handbook to her.
Responding to the team’s presentation, she welcomed them and acknowledged the efforts of the team especially their passion for FLHE. She stated that since HIV/AIDS was discovered, almost all schools formed the anti HIV/AIDS club and such topic has been mainstreamed into various subjects. She added that the awareness, consequences and prevention of HIV/AIDS is there but such need to be a continuous process. On this, she said that the ISERT workshop will add value and create more awareness as those ignorant will be more informed. She added that efforts will be scaled-up to effectively implement FLHE in Niger State as a result of ISERT’s presence in the State. She told the team that the Ministry will support ISERT in the best possible ways. The Honourable Minister went on to congratulate the University of Ibadan, where ISERT is domiciled, on being one of the top 1,000 universities in the world. She said that the evidence of such feat is obvious through ISERT’s hard work and passion for excellence and development.
