Advocacy Visit to the Honourable Speaker Niger State House of Assembly
The Honourable Speaker received the ISERT team to the State House of Assembly. He was acquainted with the ISERT project and the findings of the national evaluation research. The documents produced by the team were presented to him. He went through them and made some salient observations that reflected the findings. He observed that some of the shortcomings of the FLHE in Nigeria is not just funding but;
- lack of motivation, passion and interest.
- people bringing their friends to workshops not sorely to be trained but to gain the financial benefits involved.
- lack of enlightenment on FLHE, etc.
He said that if others could be as passionate as ISERT on issues regarding FLHE in Nigeria, giant strides would have been made and some of the challenges facing adolescents especially drug addiction, unwanted/unplanned pregnancy, etc. would have been reduced to the barest minimum. He beckoned on the team to start by enlightening the participants on FLHE. According to him, “FLHE is key to our children’s development. It is really needed”.
He commended the team for their passion and the study conducted so far. He said that he is interested in the programme and willing to collaborate with the team. Regarding that, he assured the team that he will present the issue to the House and advice the executive council on it. He encouraged the team to meet with relevant partners including the Ministry of Health and collaborate extensively. According to the Honourable Speaker, “FLHE goes beyond HIV/AIDS to life skills which makes it indispensable for youths”. He promised to attended one of the zonal trainings or send a delegate if there are administrative hitches to his participation. The team had a photo session with him.
